The Narrow Road to the Deep North, Richard Flanagan (Vintage Australia) – WWII POW story inspired by Flanagan’s grandfather
The Night Guest, Fiona McFarlane (Penguin: Hamish Hamilton) – a woman sees and hears things, including a tiger in the midst, but are they real?
Coal Creek, Alex Miller (Allen & Unwin) – A story of friendship in the Queensland countryside.
• Belomor, Nicolas Rothwell (Text Publishing) – A painter seeks redemption after the disasters of his years in northern Australia.

The two joint winners were A World of Other People by Steven Carroll and The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan. Flanagan famously donated his prize money to a worthy organisation.
